This two-disc installment of Universal's excellent GOLD series presents a 30-track set of 1980s soul classics. While the well-selected collection features renowned hits such as Diana Ross's vibrant, assertive anthem "I'm Coming Out" and Rick James's outrageously funky "Superfreak," it also calls on less-obvious gems, including Billy Preston and Syreeta's smooth, string-laden "With You I'm Born Again" and the Gap Band's groove-heavy, New Wave-tinged "Early in the Morning," making for a dynamic and highly entertaining compilation that sheds light on a transitional era for soul music.
