Purslane Hominy Will (Scarlett Johansson) is a young high school dropout living in trailer park trash in Florida with a low class boyfriend Lee (Clayne Crawford) when she learns of her mother Lorraine's death in New Orleans. Though she hasn't seen or heard from her druggie, songwriter mother in years, she wants to attend her funeral and strikes out for New Orleans.

Arriving on the doorstep of her mother's rundown house, she discovers Bobby Long (John Travolta), an unkempt drunk who once was an English professor in a college in Alabama but fell into oblivion and alcohol when he lost his wife and family. He is living in filth with Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht) who, as Bobby's teaching assistant whom Bobby has deemed gifted, has followed Bobby to write Bobby's biography - a work in progress that has stalemated in favor of alcoholism and disillusionment. Pursey hears that Booby and Lawson were Lorraine's closest friends (she had invited them to flop in her shabby house, entertained by their low key scholasticism and literature quoting), and that Lorraine had willed her home to the three of them.

"Vicky Cristina Barcelona" is the best comedy that writer/director Woody Allen("Annie Hall") has made in years. Allen writes and directs a very fine comedy, and it owes credit to its superb execution.

"Vicky Cristina Barcelona" follows Americans Vicky(Rebecca Hall) and Cristina(Scarlett Johansson) on their Summer vacation in Barcelona. When bride-to-be Vicky and casual-romantic photographer Cristina accept a proposition by local artist Juan Antonio(Javier Bardem) to spend the weekend together with the artist, love and lust ensue.

"Vicky Cristina Barcelona" may take place in Spain, but the dialogue is unmistakably similar to the dialogue in Allen's New York tales. This is a good thing because as with many of Allen's finer works, the characters in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" are neurotic and indecisive. Does the stuck-up Vicky want to give up the conventions of a relationship for romance? Does Cristina want to give up romance for the conventions of a relationship? Are slick artist Juan Antonio and ex-wife Maria Elena(Penelope Cruz) so attracted to each other that they'll settle for a love-hate relationship? These questions never fail to intrigue the audience, and while the conclusion feels oddly abrupt, the film's way too enjoyable to be overtly disappointed by the otherwise terrific script.

The remarkable performances enliven "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." Javier Bardem("No Country for Old Men") delivers a performance so shamelessly charming that his character's upfront nature makes Juan Antonio all the more likable. Rebecca Hall("The Prestige") and Scarlett Johansson("Match Point") deliver flawless chemistry as friends Vicky and Cristina, and they're relatable enough for the audience to understand their characters. Penelope Cruz("Volver") steals the show not so much because she is masterful at comic timing(which she is) but because her character maintains so many unlikable traits that it takes the charisma and depth of an actress as talented as Penelope Cruz to pull off the role.

"Vicky Cristina Barcelona" proves that Woody Allen still knows how to make sharp comedies. It's an intriguing and entertaining addition to Woody Allen's screenwriting and directorial career, and a movie that's simply a pleasure to watch.

"The Nanny Diaries" did not get very good reviews but I liked the previews so I decided to see it instead of another movie that got much better reviews and I'm glad I did.

"The Nanny Diaries" is entertaining the entire time. It might not have you rolling in the aisles like "Superbad," but it is not that kind of movie.

The main reason to see this film is because of Scarlett Johansson. She makes Annie the Nanny such a sympathetic character, that we stay interested in the film and we care about what happens to her. Scarlett Johansson made a name for herself doing a lot of independent film but this is probably her best performance in a mainstream film. Not only is her acting phenomenal, she is the world's most beautiful nanny.

A lot of the professional reviews seem to have been disappointed by "The Nanny Diaries" because it was written and directed by the same people who did "American Splendor." They were expecting something more like that film. "The Nanny Diaries" is not that kind of film. It is not particularly quirky and it will probably appeal to a wide audience. I thought it was better than "The Devil Wears Prada," which it often gets compared to.

"The Nanny Diaries" is absolutely mandatory viewing for Scarlett Johansson fans. For anyone else, this film might win you over.

Bloodsport (1988)



Tomorrow we leave for the kumite! This is without a doubt my favourite Van Damme film; the acting is supremely cheesy, the plot weak as wet paper, and the soundtrack is classic 80's naff pop.

A true cult classic.

What Just Happened? (2008)

Bit of borrowed imbd plot sum:

Based on producer Art Linson's book, "What Just Happened? Bitter Hollywood Tales from the Front Line", the film version tells the story of a successful Hollywood producer, Ben, played by Robert Deniro, as he juggles his personal and professional crises. This film has an impressive cast including Robin Wright Penn as Ben's second wife, Kelly; John Turturro as Dick, the stereotypical shifty agent; Stanley Tucci as Scott, the blocked screenplay writer; Michael Wincott as Jeremy, the temperamental director; Catherine Keener, as Lou, the hardcore studio exec; Bruce Willis as the demanding movie star; and Sean Penn as himself.

This mildly funny expose of modern-day Hollywood, was entertaining, but a little disappointing. The message is supposed to shock and outrage the viewer about how the film industry ruins art by turning it into pure commerce. But there have been plenty of Hollywood satires like "The Player" that have done this genre better. Although the source of the material is authentic and despite an outstanding cast (who all give great performances), "What Just Happened?" ultimately has nothing new to say besides the fact that Hollywood is a devious place to work. As a gimmicky farce, it works, but as a satire it was a limp and familiar insider's movie that lacked sharp irony, humor and novel characters.

This film won't appeal to everyone, but it does have some good one liners and funny moments. However, the combination of these actors working together in a comedy may be worth the cost of admission alone.
