Amy Winehouse - much can be saidabout the late Amy Winehouse, one ofthe U.K.'s flagship vocalistsduring the 2000s. The British press andtabloids seemed to focus on herrowdy behavior, heavy consumption ofalcohol, and tragic end, but fansand critics alike embraced her ruggedcharm, brash sense of humor, anddistinctively soulful and jazzyvocals. Her platinum-sellingbreakthrough album, Frank (2003),elicitedcomparisons ranging fromBillie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan toMacy Grayand Lauryn Hill.Interestingly enough, despite her strongcockney accentand vernacular, one can often hear aspects of each ofthose singers'vocal repertoirein Winehouse's own voice. Nonetheless, her allure hadalways been hersongwriting -- almost always deeplypersonal but bestknown for itsprofanity and brutal candor.
Born to a taxi-driving father and apharmacist mother, Winehouse grewupin the Southgate area of northernLondon. Her upbringing wassurroundedby jazz. Many of the uncles onher mother's side wereprofessional jazzmusicians, and even herpaternal grandmother wasromantically involvedwith British jazz legendRonnie Scott at onetime. While at home, shelistened to and absorbedher parents'selection of greats: DinahWashington, Ella Fitzgerald, and FrankSinatra among others. However, inher teens, she was drawn totherebellious spirit of TLC, Salt-N-Pepa,and other American R&Bandhip-hop acts of the time. At the age of16, after she had beenexpelled from London's Sylvia Young TheatreSchool, she caught herfirst break when pop singer Tyler James, aschoolmate and close friend, passed on her demo tape to his A&R, whowas searching for a jazzvocalist.
That opportunity led to her recording contract withIsland Records. Bythe end of 2003, when she was 20 years old, Islandhad released herdebut album, Frank. With contributions from hip-hopproducer/keyboardistSalaam Remi, Winehouse's amalgam of jazz, pop, soul, and hip-hopreceived rave reviews. The album was nominated forthe 2004 MercuryMusic Prize as well as two Brit awards, and its leadsingle, "StrongerThan Me," won an Ivor Novello Award for BestContemporary Song.
Following Winehouse's debut, the accoladesand inquiring interviewsappeared concurrently in the press with hertempestuous public life.Several times she showed up to her club or TVperformances too drunk tosing a whole set. In 2006, her managementcompany finally suggested thatshe enter rehab for alcohol abuse, butinstead, she dumped the companyand transcribed the ordeal into theU.K. Top Ten hit "Rehab," the leadsingle for her second, criticallyacclaimed album, Back to Black.Containing evocative productions fromSalaam Remi and BritishDJ/multi-instrumentalist Mark Ronson, the albumsomewhat abandoned jazz, delving into the sounds of '50s/'60s-eragirlgroup harmonies, rock& roll, and soul. The fanfare over therelease was so great that itstarted to spill over onto U.S. shores;several rappers and DJs madetheir own remixes of various songs, not tomention covers by Prince andthe Arctic Monkeys.
One monthafter Winehouse won Best Female Artist at the Brit Awards inFebruary2007, Universal released Back to Black in the U.S. The LPchartedhigher than any other American debut by a British femalerecordingartist before it, and it remained in the Top Ten for severalmonths, selling a million copies by the end of that summer. Just as intheU.K., she became the talk of the town, landing on the covers ofRollingStone and Spin magazines. Not long afterward, though, Winehousecanceled her North American tour. Early reports revealed that she wasentering rehab for alcohol and drug addiction, but her new managementdenied the claims, stating it was due to severe exhaustion. Her erraticbehavior kept her and her new husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, in thetabloids constantly, and on and off stages on both sides of theAtlantic, but in late 2007, American fans were finally given a chance tohear Winehouse's early work, with a slightly abbreviated (two songsremoved and one added) version of Frank.
The next few yearswould be filled with drama, disappointment, and verylittle music. By2009, her marriage had ended in divorce, she hadrepeatedly beenarrested on assault charges and/or public orderoffenses, and herstruggles with substance abuse and mental healthissues tragicallyplayed out in the press. Public performances hadturned into incoherentdisasters, the worst of them posted to videosharing sites for all tosee. A track on the Quincy Jones tribute Q:Soul Bossa Nostra wouldappear in 2010, while a duet with Tony Bennettwas announced in early2011, but a planned follow-up to Back to Blackwould never make it pastthe demo stage. Winehouse was found dead in herCamden, Londonapartment on July 23, 2011. An investigation todetermine the cause ofdeath was announced soon after.
